Looking Forward to a Strong 2023
As we put 2022 in the rearview mirror, at the Chamber, we are always trying to figure out what’s next for our community and businesses. The growth in our community is fairly obvious as I bet many reading this have new neighbors. Housing growth will likely continue as Morristown is a job hub for the region and who doesn’t want to live closer to their job with the cost of gas. Predictions are new housing starts will slow up to 50% but our market still has a pretty significant demand, especially with surrounding counties declining to even permit new housing starts.
Retail and commercial growth will also likely remain strong as we see new development on both sides of town. It is always interesting seeing the retail rumor mill online and funny enough, 99% of it is wrong. I’ve always found it interesting that a local person would trust someone bagging their groceries while they shop out of town at a chain we don’t have. I’m betting those employees aren’t included in the site location decisions for billion dollar companies, but yeah, I’m sure they know best…Saying that, our local focus will be on retail that draws regionally as spreading the local dollar doesn’t add new money to the Hamblen County economy. We must continue to attract regional chains that people will travel outside of their community for to generate new tax dollars in our community.
There is one constant in our community and it will likely never change is the availability of jobs. We are blessed to have many options for job seekers that will show up, work, pass drug screenings and be employable. At the Chamber, we look forward to a strong 2023 and wish you and your business well!
